Europe, US Move to Advance Accessibility Through New Policy Tools

In rapid succession, the European Union and the US government have acted aggressively to advance the cause of accessible ICT. In Europe, three major standards bodies released their collaborative accessibility standard for a full range of ICT products and services: "Accessibility requirements suitable for public procurement of ICT products and services in Europe" (PDF). In the US, the Access Board announced that it has completed its review of ICT accessibility standards under Sections 255 and 508, and submitted them for regulatory review, aimed at a public release of proposed rules this summer. These nearly simultaneous actions spur hope for a harmonized set of technical requirements that will serve both industry and technology users with disabilities.
